Zolochivsky Castle (Золочівський замок): Chinese Palace and Haunted Tunnels

Sights and Monuments in Lviv, Lwow, Lvov, Lemberg

Overview

Zolochivsky Castle was initially built in the 17th century as a fortified citadel (the pentagonal fortifications at each of its corners are still hard to miss). The castle is often part of a three-castle tour of Lviv Region called "Ukraine's Golden Horseshoe." Zolochivsky’s grounds include the main castle (also known as “the grand palace”) and the Chinese Palace. The latter has little to do with China and it’s said that Polish King Jan III Sobieski built the Chinese Palace to express his love for his wife Marysieńka. Many tales are told about Zolochivsky Castle – whispers about secrets of the Templars and ghosts in its underground tunnels.

Location

Zolochivsky Castle is located in Zolochiv village in Lviv region 64 kilometers from Lviv.

How to get there:

  • The easiest way is part of an organized excursion with a tour operator.  Several tour companies offer tours of “Ukraine’s Golden Horseshoe”, which includes Olesky, Pidgoretsky and Zolochivsky Castles.
  • By car. Take the “Lviv-Ternopil” highway and drive 64 km to Zolochiv village.
