Salo Modern Art Museum (Музей-ресторан Сало): The Art of Pork Fat

Museum, Restaurants in Lviv, Lwow, Lvov, Lemberg

Salo is a restaurant and art museum that serves the Ukrainian delicacy salo (pork fat) in surprising and provocative shapes.

Salo is located on Lviv’s central avenue Prospect Svobody , a 2-minute walk from Rynok Square and all the main downtown tourist sights.

The dark lounge-like interior is good for groups of friends who want to sit closer together on its snow-white sofas. Some of the decor make strike you as a bit over the top, like the immense beating heart made of fat in the middle of the room. Salo-themed pictures line the walls of the blue neon-lit dining area. Fat sculptures and souvenirs are available for viewing and purchase – you can see historical and literature figures made from salo or even take your picture next to a little baby alien lying in a crib.

The menu has many options for large groups that feature salo (pork fat). You can order a salo sculpture like a Cossack’s head or Marylin Monroe’s lips, both go well with fiery horilka (Ukrainian for “vodka”). Each salo creation has a delicious filling like meat varenyky (dumplings), pickles and cabbage. For variety, go for the platter with 12 types of salo, which comes with black bread and a shot of horilka, beer or juice. There are even salo desserts, including salo in chocolate or salo ice-cream. If you’re not in the mood for salo, the menu offers a several sushi and Italian dishes (Yapi and Bianco Rosso are part of the same restaurant group as SALO.)

Keep in mind

  • The entrance to Salo can be bit tricky to find – just look for the large poster of a black man and white woman with the word “САЛО” of above them, next to Yapi sushi restaurant, enter the doorway and make a hard right downstairs.
  • Admission to the museum area costs about € 4 per person and includes a tour and salo tasting.
  • Salo operates as a restaurant till 11 p.m., its museum is only open to visitors till 6 p.m.
  • If you’re with small children, then it might not be good idea to bring them to the museum since its fat sculptures often come in provocative shapes (and Venus’ breasts, while worth a look, are not the most salacious sculpture on display).
