Overview
Lychakiv Cemetery, often called Lychakiv Necropolis, is one of the oldest cemeteries in Europe. Each year its architectural beauty attracts hordes of tourists and it has been compared to famed Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Since its creation in 1787 Lychakiv Cemetery has been the final resting place of the city’s prominent citizens from all members of Lviv’s diverse Christian population: Austrians, Poles, Armenians, Ukrainians, and Russians. Jewish citizens had their own burial grounds at Yanivs'ke Cemetery.
There are over two thousand tombs with renowned names such as: Zygmunt Gorgolewsky, architect of Lviv’s famed Opera House, famous Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko, Stefan Banach, accomplished mathematician and many others who left their mark on history. The war memorials deserve special attention, including those of Ukrainian liberation fighters, Red Army soldiers and the “Cemetery of Lwów Eagles” (Polish military graves of 1918-1920). Each of the cemetery’s 86 plots is wrapped in legend and mystery. To learn more about Lychakiv Cemetery, see our related feature article.
