Kentavr (“Centaur”) is a restaurant-sweet shop for diners, who would like to enjoy Ukrainian food in a prime location on Lviv’s Rynok Square.
Kentavr is hard to miss – look for its dark brown antique-style doors in front of the Amphitrite fountain on a corner of Lviv’s Rynok Square.
Diners can choose from three differently designed halls: a cafe-style colored room (which allows smoking), the elegant back hall for non-smokers and the “Vegetable Cellar,” a dimly-lit stylish basement area with back-lit rows of stewed fruits, which are available for sale. During warmer weather, Kentavr’s summer terrace with its potted plants and comfy chairs is one of the loveliest places to enjoy the historic and human scenery of Lviv’s Rynok Square. In cooler weather if you catch a chill, then ask your waiter to bring you a wool blanket.
At Kentavr you can find the classics of Ukrainian cuisine, including well-prepared pork ribs with pumpkin, sweet and savory varenyky (dumplings with various fillings) – try the ones with cherries. Kentavr’s house specialties include tasty rabbit in sour cream and Hungarian-style carp goulash. Early birds will find a great selection of breakfasts available from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. including warm croissants, cheese pancakes and omelets. For dessert, local cheesecake (syrnyk) with caramel and almonds is a good bet. For something healthier, try the homemade yogurt. Portions at Kentavr can be larger than average so bring your appetite.
