The 2012 Alfa Jazz Festival will take place on June 1, 2 and 3rd and will feature headliner performances by guitarist John McLaughlin, the Kenny Garrett Quintet and Grammy award-winning singer Cassandra Wilson. Headliners will perform at Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Culture Park, a 10-15 minute taxi ride from Lviv’s center. You can catch free concerts in Lviv’s city center on Rynok Square and Potocki Palace Square.

For two days Lviv’s Festival of Medieval Culture takes you back to the heroic age of brave knights and fair ladies. Highlights include knight fights among members of historical reenactment clubs. You can try your hand in archery and medieval dancing, taste medieval cuisine and try on a suit of armor and participate in many masters classes of medieval handcrafts. LvivKlezFest was established to revive the musical traditions of the city’s Jewish community and organized by Lviv’s All-Ukrainian Jewish charity fund. Each year the festival welcomes artists from Israel, Austria, Germany, Russia and Ukraine, who perform klezmer music (a musical tradition of Eastern European Jews).

August 24 is a date of special importance for Lviv’s citizens – after 70 years as a part of the Soviet Union, Ukraine gained its independence on this date in 1991 and as a sovereign state on the path towards democracy. Celebrations in Lviv often include a traditional handicrafts fair on Rynok Square, performances by Ukrainian musicians and choirs and national dance troupes. Most events are free and take place Lviv’s city center.

Tu Stan! is a great time for those who enjoy historical reenactments and live music. The festival takes place in a group of cliffs in the Carpathian Mountains that once held Tustan fortress, which was built by a Slavic tribe back in the 9th century. Each the fall the Tu Stan! festival draws thousands of young people, who come to sing traditional Ukrainian songs by the bonfire and participate in reenactments of medieval tournaments, trades and games.

The Pampukh Festival was created to promote the traditional Ukrainian doughnut, called a pampukh, which is considered a culinary symbol of Christmas for Ukrainians. The Festival is a big outdoor food fair, where you can find all types of doughnuts: German berliners, Russian ponchiki, Polish pączki and Jewish bagels.
